Tromsø: one of the cleanest on inland waterways thanks to Neste MY HVO100
Without modifications, emit 90% less CO2
“Reducing CO2 emissions by up to 90%, without even modifying the technology and engine, yes that appealed to me,” says Wilco Ooms in his comfortable garden office. “That’s why we started talking to our fuel partner OK Slurink about HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). There, fortunately, we found a willing ear and they advised us Neste MY Renewable Diesel. Because look, someday we need to go to zero emissions, either electric or hydrogen propulsion. But we are far from that yet! That makes our ships three times as expensive to begin with, and also brings with it all kinds of technical uncertainties and delivery problems. In addition, there is simply no room on inland vessels for huge gas tanks or battery packs, the cleanliness of which is open to question. Anyway, we still wanted to take some major steps to bridge the probably long period towards zero emissions. So we came up with the idea to equip the Tromsø with the very latest technology, Stage V engines and, instead of conventional B7 diesel, to bunker Neste MY Renewable Diesel (HVO100) at OK Slurink.”
Jesper Vermaas adds: “It is quite likely that inland shipping will be the first to be considered in the context of the government’s drive to minimize emissions. Our end customers and governments will also increasingly ask for low-emission services through charterer Transko. We want to be ready for that. And sailing on HVO100, which reduces CO2 emissions by up to 90%, is not only very
effective, but also a good test case.
